PostSubject: Discussion: USA's Special Import Business   Mon Apr 09, 2012 2:53 pm

The next topic of discussion I wish to bring up so that people can debate about is regarding two company's releasing anime in the United States and their policies of their releases. The to companies I wish to discuss in question are related to what is generally known as the USA special import business and it headed by Aniplex with NIS halfway between Early Sentai Filmworks and Aniplex.

The question comes after the news that Bakemonogatari is going to be released stateside. The problem with this lies in that it is Aniplex that has decided to license and release it. Aniplex is known for a number of what most anime fans call flaws in its releases. First: Aniplex usually does not dub its shows. Second: Aniplex releases a very small number of what it licenses. Third: Aniplex generally has one 12-13 episode series run from 200-400 dollars. In other words for the casual college anime fan the price is more or less ridiculous. Aniplex has released a number of shows that had they actually been released for the normal price of anime from 40-80 dollars or hell even 25-30 dollars per movie (for kara no kyoukai) I would have bought them in a heartbeat. Some of my favorite shows are released via Aniplex and NIS and yet as being as poor as I am I am unable to purchase any of these shows. My discussion lies in this policy. Do you believe that Aniplex has a good idea in doing this to shows and essentially making them available in the U.S. for import pricing minus shipping?

Aniplex has released a number of shows that likely would have bigger fanbases if they could have actually been released over here Bakemonogatari, Madoka, Fate/Zero, My Little Sister Can't be This Cute, and Kara no Kyoukai are just a few of the shows that will thanks to Aniplex be collectors only shows. The casual anime fan just can't afford the pricing for these shows...and then the question comes whether or not the collector's editions are really worth what you pay.

I recently stumbled upon an article on a random blog regarding Aniplex/NIS import business. The article is interesting and some decent points are brought up (which I'll explain in a later posting) but I do not agree completely with it. The general idea is that these shows are for older anime fans not at the college level but in career fields that can actually afford to collect these shows. Aniplex is generally slightly cheaper usually one series will cost between 120-300 when in its entirety but usually will come with artbooks, great packaging, soundtracks, and a bunch of extras that used to come with most anime releases back in the day. So again after reading the article directly below and having a basic understanding of the situation do you agree or disagree that Aniplex and NIS are not actually hurting the industry?

Article in Question: http://sharekoube.wordpress.com/2012/03/01/is-aniplex-usas-special-import-business-a-danger-to-frugal-anime-fans/

I for one will use the fact that these outrageous prices actually help promote piracy in some ways because people can't afford the shows so why not just steal them? Hell if the companies do not bother to dub a show then how is it any different from simply taking it from online? This is a very common thought concept with people and Aniplex and NIS indirectly help people decide to pirate. So although I'm not going to deal with it completely right now but the next discussion that I will create will likely be "Discussion: Pirating" but until then just think about the question and I'll post my own overall thoughts on the Aniplex issue later in the week.

I would hold off on your answer until you read other people's opinions on the topic. . I wish to have an anime club debate on the issue. You may find this fun or you may simply find this to be an annoyance but regardless I ask that you at least read the other people's posts before making your own decision. Debate's do become heated at times just refrain from personal insult against other people...I could care less what you do so long as you argue/debate/discuss somewhat civilly.

I do agree with their prices being ridiculous but I can understand it from their point of view. They tend to license shows that people would buy really expensive for (Garden of Sinners and Madoka). While I will never buy it from those guys people will shell out the money for them if they really enjoy them, the same goes for NIS.

Bacanno, you and I (and majority of college students) are probably not in their target range. They tend to go for people who make a lot of money or don't have to worry about financial troubles. It's hard to say that but honestly I think it's the truth. NIS releases are usually ok, but I honestly could care less about the special booklet that comes with it. I want to own Kimi Ni Todoke, but I don't want that huge box that comes with it, I just want the dvds itself.

Anime dubs:
-degrades the english language
-Promotes tagging and vandalism
-degrades women
-Implies postivity to primitive force (look at any Japanese release, and youll see an imaginative cover with interesting artwork, look at an American cover, and youll see a pissed off nigra wanting to fight)
-Shifts values to "bling" and expensive shoes which leads to theft
-Promotes Rastafrian culture, which tries to legalize weed

Dubs can be made by ANYBODY, a recording machine is all you need to make voice overs and get released int stores. If youve been shot, thats credible and prefered to hype your image, just like growing up on the "street"
The lines are simple, the sentences dont need to be related, just whatever can ryhme is fine. They dont even have to make sense, just as long as it sticks to an even flow. And sometimes, dubbers will get lazy and mispronounce words to fir the lip sync.
Now some of you guys are gonna say "omg racist", but more than half of all anime is sold to whites. No other genre of animation promotes more negative values than anime, and as it spreads toward different regions, it infects the native population like a fungus.

There is NO talent in dubs, so next time, when your downloading English dubs, get yourself a pirated sub copy. Your brain will thank you for not degenerating it into a pile of primtive processing jello
